Guild Mark V Classical Guitar - 1964 Spruce / Brazilian Rosewood - Made in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Offered for sale is a wonderful 58 year old Guild Mark V Classical Guitar made with Spruce and vintage Brazilian Rosewood. This is my favorite Mark V and it is in fair condition for its age. The serial number is 30376 which dates it to 1964. It's a nice example of Guild craftsmanship and was handmade by Carlo Greco back then with a Spanish Heel connecting the neck to the body. There have been some stable repairs to the top and the rosette came to me in the condition as found so I price this guitar as shown. As noted, the top is solid Spruce and the back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood. The top and bottom are also wood bound and this guitar weighs about 3 pounds. The Mark V classical guitar model is part of Guild's "professional series." The fretboard is ebony and it has side dot indicators. The bridge is rosewood. There are some dings and blemishes all around this guitar but it plays and sounds real nice. The Kolb tuners have a beautiful finish. The neck and action are good with new frets. The nut and saddle are tusq. This guitar has a wonderful tone with the Brazilian Rosewood. This example from Guild is great for anyone wanting a fine vintage American made classical guitar with BRW. I have read reviews over the years that Guild Mark V's and VI's are both comparable to fine examples from Jose Ramirez although I have never played a Ramirez as yet. For those folks new to Guild classical guitars, the Mark series consisted of a Mark I thru Mark VII. The Mark I, II, and III are typically the student models. The Mark IV, V, and VI are the more professional models. Guild also made a Mark VII custom artist / artist special model which is very rare. The Mark series of classical guitars produced by Guild Guitars are some of the finest American made classical guitars manufactured in a factory or production setting. In my opinion, these classical guitar models are on par or even superior to classical guitar examples produced by US manufactures such as Martin, Gibson, Favilla, and Gretsch. I believe this is because the Guild designs were based upon the Spanish (Torres) guitar fan braced tradition from centuries past and were designed by Carlo Greco in the early sixties. Guild's Mark series or family of classical guitars were produced from 1961 through 1987 in both the Hoboken, New Jersey and Westerly, Rhode Island factories. I will close by saying, Guild only made about 392 examples of the Mark V and they rarely come up for sale on EBay or elsewhere especially in vintage BRW. I will really miss this guitar but I must sell because I am moving and I need to get this in the hands of a appreciative basic player.
